A WISE CHOICE

I’ve always loved places that hold true to their histories and long-held and revered traditions, while also keeping open-minded to new, forward-thinking, and creative ideas. I always found much of that back in New York City, and have enjoyed discovering such places as well here in Barbados.

Through my never-ending internet researching and resourcing, I found a beautiful eatery — opened not even three weeks yet — whose menu, decor, and general vibe exemplified exactly that still cultural authentic fusion.

The place is called Sage Bistro and is the creative brainchild of Wendy and Ted, who imagined (and then fully and successfully realized) a spacious yet intimate, rustic yet somehow also cosmopolitan space, one that visually immerses its visitors into its very inviting island-minded, deftly acute and minimalist forest theme — serifed with artistic, nature-related flourishes — and offers, beyond modern coffee and pastry staples and more unique cafe-style offerings, a breakfast and lunch menu with most items being familiar comforting homey dishes, but then then prepared and plated with a more refined, yet never haughty or stodgy, nuance and finesse.

Yes, I enjoyed two meals — an aioli-topped crispy flying fish sandwich with spicy fries and slaw yesterday, and a blueberry walnut cake and eggs Benedict for breakfast this morning — there within 24 hours, its 10-minute ride from my apartment being an welcome convenience, and the warm, friendly, and professional service from owners on down mandates many more visits from me and soon, I easily believe, many others.
