A Delicious Way to Make New Friends

My plan was to finally return to Chicken Rita’s — at the best time to not wait the 45 minutes I was told first time I visited last November it would be for her renown fried chicken would be ready to serve — to take some quick pics of this famed yardbird and then take it home to enjoy.

But as continues to be the case here in Barbados, complete strangers don’t just offer genuinely friendly salutations, but after just a few bon mots exchanged invite you to join them at their table where they were socializing.

They were so nice indeed that I was only happy to meet and commingle with Glen, Laurie, Jane, and Summer, the latter two recently returned from my hometown of New York City.

It turned out to be an unexpectedly ideal early evening, as the conversation was thoroughly engaging, my fried chicken leg platter came out mere minutes after I ordered, the fried chicken was as adroitly seasoned and tender and juicy as had been described by many locals and visitors, and the universe was kind enough to wait until I was just back in my taxi home to let the by then invisible rain clouds release their scheduled precipitation.

I don’t think I’ve had as humbly homey a dining experience as I had here at Chicken Rita’s this early evening. I look forward to repeating it (often!).
