HAVE BEEN HOLDING ON TO my idea of this dessert/breakfast "mashup" of French Toast Rice Krispies Treats for a couple of months already. I made the time this morning to finally make them, melting marshmallows into butter, then—for this recipe—adding some vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, and some chopped smoked bacon.
While I was at Fairway supermarket buying the ingredients for this, I also of course came across a box of Cocoa Krispies (Cocoa Pebbles, actually, but unbeknownst at the time), and realizing that I had cocoa powder in my cupboard at home, bought the box of those as well and added the cocoa to a separate pot of melted butter and marshmallow, choosing to also, once spread in a cake pan, dust the top with extra cocoa powder.
I would feel guiltier about having these in the morning—even, if not especially, on a Sunday—but they wound up not only impressing me, but were a huge hit with neighbors and local friends as well this morning.
Now, although not looking forward to the eventual clean-up, I can't wait see what I treats dream up with other favorite childhood cereals in the near future.
